Mia Mottley’s Parents Have Million Dollar Home in Florida

March 16, 2009 · 20 Comments

Disclaimer: I am just providing facts and comments. I am not implying that anyone mentioned in this post has acted incorrectly. The rationale for my disclosure of these facts is that I believe that public figures and their immediate families should disclose their assets publicly.

Former Deputy Prime Minister and current Opposition Leader, Mia Mottley, has spoken out against money laundering. When no one else would do it, Mia declared her assets. Mia Mottley has embraced the concept of public officials disclosing their assets.

Mia has a famous father who also has links to the Barbados Labour Party.

Elliot Mottley is a public figure.

Here is a comment on the above quote. In its 2009 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, the State Department identified Antigua and BarbudaBelize and Cayman Islands among “jurisdictions of primary concern, whose financial institutions engage in currency transactions involving significant amounts of proceeds from international narcotics trafficking. The State Department categorized Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, British Virgin Islands, Grenada and Trinidad & Tobago as “Jurisdictions of Concern”.

With respect to money laundering, I have color coded the countries as red for worst, and brown for bad .

Elliot Mottley appears to have spent the last six years of his life in countries belonging to the worst category, “jurisdictions of primary concern“. He may deserve a commendation for volunteering his extensive legal experience to the benefit of these challenging jurisdictions.

A casual Google search revealed this waterfront house at this South Florida address.

elliothouse1

xxxx NW xxth Lane, Parkland, FL 33076
B: Aval Raz
S: Elliot Deighton Mottley and Santa Amor Mottley
$385,000 on April 27, 2001

Santa Amor Mottley is Elliot’s wife.

elliothouse2A slightly more serious search found this home belonging to Elliot Mottley and his wife. On January 3rd, 2008 Elliot and Amor forked over a cool $1,000,000 to buy this CUTLER OAKS home in the Village Of Palmetto Bay, Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Update 3/17: The Mottleys had a “homestead exemption” of $25,000 in 2007, but not in 2008. I thought this was unusual because Elliot has a job in the Cayman Islands which is over 400 miles from Miami, Florida.  I thank commenter Maggie Dokic for this explanation:  “I just wanted to point out that in the state of Florida one inherits the homestead exemption that is on a property for the remainder of the year when one buys.” The official record says the sale took place on “12/2007″, but web sources put the date as “January 3rd, 2008″.

exempt“State law allows Florida homeowners to claim up to a $50,000 Homestead Exemption (HEX) on their primary residence.”

    Dear Barbados Money Laundering Advisory:

You wrote “Elliot Mottley appears to have spent the last six years of his life in countries belonging to the worst category, “jurisdictions of primary concern“.”

Please note that Australia, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany,India, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, are also listed in the same report as a jurisdictions of primary concern.

What if I told you that I had spent the past 60 years, my whole life living in countries of primary concern?

Does that make me a drug trafficker or a money launderer?

What if I further told you that I have never used any illegal substance, nor misused any legal substance.

The list of jurisdictions of primary concern include more than 4 billion people. The 4 billion of us have to live somewhere man??

There are no settlements on the moon as yet.

    Stupseee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve never met Mr. Mottley, nor his wife, nor his daughters. I don’t want to meet them either as I don’t particularly like lawyers, but cuhdear man. The people have to live somewhere.
What if I told you that I have spent the past 60 years in countries of primary concern

And dear Barbados Money Laundering Advisory:

I believe that you live in the United States which is also listed as a jurisdiction of primary concern.

Does that mean that you are you a drug trafficker or money launderer?

    Stupseee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    J,

I am sorry that you missed my point. As I said at the top of the article, I am not implying any wrongdoing.

This article is about public officials declaring assets, not about wrongdoing.

Even the President of the US has to declare his assets. The reason he is required to do so is to account to the public. Checks and balances are very important. Do you have a problem with that, J?

Good morning, I just wanted to point out that in the state of Florida one inherits the homestead exemption that is on a property for the remainder of the year when one buys.

In other words, it was not the Mottley’s that had the homestead exemption in 2007, but whomever they purchased the house from. That explains why it was no longer in place in 2008.

A home buyer has to apply for their own homestead exemption, if they qualify for such, as of January 1st the year AFTER they purchase the house.

You are NOT sorry and I DID NOT miss your point.

Your point (if you are capable of making a point) is to IMPLY some misbehaviour on the Mottley’s part.

Since you are so smart and since you live in Florida and no doubt own property in Florida surely you know about inheriting the homestead exemption as pointed out by Maggie Dokic (and no, I don’t know Maggie either)

    Maggie Dokic,

Thanks for explaining that. I’ll put this point in the article.

    So what?

The man is one of the most successful trial lawyers in the Caribbean. When Mick Jagger’s wife Jerry Hall was arrested in Barbados he is the one who (successfully) conducted her trial defence.

He owned a multi million dollar house in Sandy Lane (about the most expensive real estate on the island), the fact that he has a second home in Florida is indicative of nothing.

Elliot Mottley had money long before his daughter went into politics, in fact he had money long before she went into school.

Further I find the defence “I am not implying that anyone mentioned in this post has acted incorrectly” to be laughable at best. You connect the fact that the man has a second home in Florida with the irrelevant fact that he has lived in “Jurisdictions of primary concern” . This article is nothing but a poorly done smear job by someone who has to hide behind the anonymity of blogs because if you published this in the paper you would have to back your words up in court with facts. Facts that you simply do not have.

You can afford to imply anything about the Mottleys.

Elliot’s father, Ernest D. Mottley, was a crook that is why Errol Barrow had to get rid of local government to get rid of him, and as the saying goes the fruit does not fall too far from the tree.

    Anonymous,

Keltruth Corp. is registered in Florida. Neither it nor its owner is anonymous.

I agree with you that the Mottley family is wealthy and that Elliot Mottley has had a lucrative career. I also agree that there is nothing wrong with owning a house in Florida.

Where I think we disagree is that you seem to wish to continue the present system where public officials do not have to declare their assets, while I want full disclosure like in the US.

    Anon,

I don’t recall any scandal with the senior Mottley. I thought he went by Deighton, rather than by his first name.

  • Anon // March 18, 2009 at 9:38 pm

There was never any scandal, he simply got in the way of Errol Barrow and tried his utmost to frustrate everything Errol Barrow wanted to achieve.

One can only be so patient. I knew, in a general sort of way, Ernest Deighton Mottley. As a boy I lived about 100 yards from his home in Eagle Hall.

He bought that house in Eagle Hall from the grandparents of the Carters who now run the Carters Hardware stores here in Barbados. My grand mother used to work as a domestic for the Carters in the same house before they sold it E.D.Mottley.

What about the Mottley brother who shot the Parochial Treasurer, escaped justice and was shipped out of Barbados? You said they did nothing?

Could give you alot more about Mia being searched in Bush Hall as AG, brother Stuart and more….

    Thanks for the back ground.

    Wuh?

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately, in fairness to the Mottleys, I am temporarily disallowing your comment with the allegations until I can cross-reference them.

I was able to cross-reference the first part of your comment, but not the part about Mia being searched.

The second part does not seem to be too serious so I have allowed your entire comment.

  • J // March 22, 2009 at 8:06 am

I believe that Ernest Deighton Mottley died before Mottley was born.

Even if he was widely regarded as a crook, how can that be Mia’a fault?

My grandfather too died before I was born. He was widely regarded as a village ram. Can that be my fault?

I certainly did not inherit his studliness (nor his money) nor his good looks nor his charm

I am no stud nor studette.

Don’t you think that it is about time that you let sleeping deads lie (or die)

    J,

You seem to be a little disoriented. I have not criticized Ernest Deighton Mottley.

J, you seem to have a personal agenda against this blog. I can tell you are not a Mottley because of your misinformation, so how come you are interested in this topic?

Remember, this post is about accountability.

Elliot D. Mottley is a very successful lawyer, no doubt about that, he probably inherited some of his father’s ill-gotten gains also , but he is no sweetbread. I was shocked when I learned that Elliot was chairman of the disciplinary committe of the Barbados Bar Association. I well remember his cocky, arrogant attitude when he was a polititian, and the many temper tantrums he threw when things did not go his way. Case in point; sometime in 1972, Elliot Mottley was representing a client in front of Magistrate Edmund King, and when a ruling did not go in his favour, he called the magistrate and idiot. Magistrate King immediately cited Mottley for contempt of court and ordered his arrest, which was affectted by Insp. Courtenay Springer(Johnny Salt Bags). On his way to the old charge office, Mottley still as arrogant as ever, resisted Springer. The next day in court , Mottley was represented by the creme de la creme of lawyers, and the case was subsequently swept under the rug because of Mottley’s political connections. He also has a very spotty record as Attorney General of Bermuda, in particular a murder case involving a young Canadian student, when the suspects were given kid gloves treatment and later got off scott-free. That case is still under debate and appeal and I think , a lawsuit.
